High school students help staff election polls
By Erin Calandra
BELLEFONTE, Pa. -- Voters slowly churned out in Centre County. There are 90 precincts in that county, staffing more than 450 poll workers.
Elections officials said it can be hard filling all those positions but, they said one of their most reliable groups of volunteers is made up of teenagers.
About 50 Bellefonte Area High School seniors are out of the classroom learning lessons in the real world on Election Day.
"We're just kind of guiding them on how to vote, said student volunteer Jasmine Velasquez.
Too young to vote themselves, these kids have gone through two official training sessions and learned a thing or two through their government class, the class that teams up with the county elections office.
"It gives them a feeling for the Election Day process and it is a great benefit to us, said Joyce McKinley, the director of the Centre County elections office.
The seniors said they have to complete 30 hours of community service before graduating and many of them found this as a way to do it.
