Penn State wrestling champion charged with DUI

By: WJAC Web Staff
CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. --

A national wresting champion for Penn State University has been charged with drunken driving.

Ed Ruth, a senior at Penn State, was charged after an incident around 2 a.m. on Nov. 13. Ruth was suspended from the team the same day.

Investigators said Ruth ran over a curb and struck a tree while trying to park his car in front of Taco Bell on College Avenue. According to court documents, his blood alcohol content was more than three times the legal limit.

State College Police Lt. Keith Robb said, "We see a lot of very high BACs. I would put .281 at one of the higher amounts that we normally see."

The charge is not Ruth's first brush with the law. He was arrested in 2011 for assaulting a police officer.

A spokesperson for the wrestling team said Ruth will be back on the roster Dec. 14 and no further action by the athletic department will be taken.
