Lady Lions return as champions

By: WJAC Web Staff and Lauren Hensley

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- One Penn State Athletic team is in the national spotlight with a lot to celebrate.  The ladys volleyball team defeated Wisconsin Saturday night to take home the programs sixth national championship title.

It was an emotional homecoming for the Lady Lions volleyball team, having left Happy Valley only days earlier with hopes of a national title, but returning Sunday with the national championship hardware.

Penn State defeated Wisconsin 3-1 in the championship in Seattle and the team now joins Stanford as the only other team to win six National Collegiate Athletic Association championships.

Penn State senior Maggie Harding said she achieved a bookend to her career with the victory.

We won my freshman year, so it was the only way we could go out was ending with a win, Harding said.

Many former Penn Staters were also celebrating the victory. In the stacks of T-shirts at the Family Clothesline on Sunday, Harrison Frantz was searching for a volleyball shirt to commemorate the win.

I think we can continue to recruit some great talent and show the east coast can represent and hang in there, Frantz said. We just need to go in there year after year and continue doing what we do.

The Family Clothesline said championship volleyball T-shirts were expected to arrive at the store later this week.
