Documentary about State College after Sandusky scandal premieres

By: Lauren Hensley

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.---When Jerry Sandusky was arrested there was havoc in State College. The arrest, followed by legendary coach Joe Paterno's firing, led to riots in the streets and outrage from alumni across the country. It was a difficult time for students and the community as they were suddenly in the national spotlight.  One documentary is focusing on the fallout after the Sandusky Scandal.

After everyone else left, we stayed,  is the tag line for a new documentary 365 Days: A Year in Happy Valley, which focuses on what happened after the Jerry Sandusky sex scandal that rocked Penn State and the State College community.  The documentary premieres Friday in State College at the State Threatre.

The event is sold out and director Erik Proulx said the inspiration from the movie came after a guilty plea was reached in the Sandusky case.  Proulx said he believed there was more to the story.

The whole story wasn't told by the rush of media that came in in the aftermath or even a week or month afterwards right after that was not the whole story, Proulx said.  We felt as though we needed to spend some time here, a full year or more to let it unfold naturally.

Proulx said the events unfolded right before his eyes saying he was extremely moved by the spirit of Penn State and the devotion graduates feel towards their University.  He said the documentary is meant to be objective and show the struggles the community faced with the unanswered questions that were still looming after the scandal.

Theres a lot of hope in the film, Proulx said. I think the hope comes from an unexpected third place that you will have to watch the film to find out.

The documentary will be shown in State College and Lewisburg on Saturday.  For information on tickets or more information about the documentary, click here.
