Copper thieves target Cambria Co. 911 tower

By: Marc Stempka

BARR TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- State police in Cambria County are investigating two copper thefts, one involving a 911 communications tower.

State police at Ebensburg said the thieves took more than 80 feet of copper wiring and three copper bars from the sites in Barr Township sometime between November 26 and December 3.

One of the thefts was reported at a Cambria County 911 tower along Buckwheat Road, police said. At that site, 33 feet of copper wire and three copper bars were cut out and removed.

The second theft involved approximately 50 feet of copper wire taken from a Penelec substation on Mosscreek Road, police said. The wire was painted red and was not rolled, but in sections.

Cambria County Emergency Services Executive Director Ron Springer said no 911 operations were interrupted as a result of the copper theft at that tower.

Police said anyone with information should contact the Ebensburg barracks at 814-471-6500.
