Firefighters trained on a real home in Altoona

By: WJAC Web Staff

ALTOONA, Pa. -- Firefighters from Altoona are were getting some hands-on training in Altoona Saturday.

The flames and smoke from the home on Shade Avenue Saturday were intentional; flames shot through the windows and smoke filled the streets as part of a controlled burn.

State instructors coming in and training firefighter on how to actually fight a fire inside a normal residence that we have here in the community, said Lakemont Fire Chief Tom Sral.

Its sad to see something like this go, said Sral. Even some of my members were a part of that group. The gentleman who used to live here was a part of the fire department.

Having a house to train in makes the situation seem more realistic.

Future firefighter Colin Gray watched his brother as he looked up to fight the flames inside.

Cause I know hes trained good and ready for it, said Gray.

Firefighters also used the training as a way to recruit new members into the different fire departments, as the community was welcome to watch.
