Will the Super Bowl impact Groundhog Day?

By: Lauren Hensley

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa.-- The town of Punxsutawney is one week away from a major celebration.  Groundhog Day falls on the same day as the Super Bowl; will the big game take away from Punxsutawney Phils spotlight?

Officials said it is a rare occurrence to have to have both the Super Bowl and Groundhog Day on the same day, but it does happen.  So when it comes to the national spotlight, will the most watched sporting event take away from furry Phil?  Experts said no.

We really don't have too many worries about that just because some of the local teams aren't in the Super Bowl this year, and Phil does his prognostication at 7 in the morning and the Super Bowl isn't late in the evening, executive director  of the Groundhog Club Katie Donald, said. So they don't overlap too much time wise so we aren't too concerned.

As Phil is preparing to predict either a longer winter or an early spring, is he willing to take on another prediction; Fans want to know who will win the Super Bowl.  Officials said they arent sure Phil is ready to tackle another prediction.

Phil will come face-to-face with his own opponent this year, though.  Last year, a prosecutor from Ohio accused Phil of fraud after he predicted an early spring and his prediction was far from the truth.  This man is expected to attend this years Groundhog Day.

In fact we invited him to this year's banquet and he is going to be here; thats' a real nice thing, Bob Roberts, Phils protector, said.

Twenty thousand spectators are excepted to attend the sunrise ceremony that will happen Feb. 2 at Gobblers Knob.
