THON raises money with dodgeball tournament

By: Lauren Hensley

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Hundreds of athletes gathered at the Penn State Multisport Complex to dodge, duck, dip and dive, all to raise money for charity.

Penn State hosted their annual dodgeball tournament to raise money for THON, the largest student-run philanthropy in the world. The mission of THON is to conquer pediatric cancer by providing outstanding emotional and financial support to the children, families, researchers and staff of the Four Diamonds Fund, according to the Penn State Dance Marathons web site.

"I think this is a very popular alternative fundraiser. We have over 100 teams registered today, which is a great turn out," Penn State senior Kristen Toole said. "I think it is a great opportunity for our volunteers and supporters to come out, and support our Thon while also staying active and getting involved."

"This is something that has been going on for a number of years at Penn State and my first year planning it, and it is just great for us to get involved and have people come out and give back to the community," marketing coordinator with Penn State basketball Logan James said.

More than 100 teams came out for the event. THON weekend will be held Feb. 21-23.
