1 of 2 gas wells sealed in Green Co. after fatal blast

DUNKARD TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Chevron officials said crews have capped a southwestern Pennsylvania gas well that exploded and caught fire earlier this month, killing a worker and injuring others.

Officials said the well that caught fire Feb. 11 in Dunkard Township, Greene County, near Bobtown, was capped Sunday. Crews are now working to cap and adjacent well that caught fire three days later.

Kelly Burch of the state Department of Environmental Protection told the Observer-Reporter newspaper that the second well should be sealed by Wednesday.

The blast killed Ian McKee, 27, of Warren County, a field service technician for Cameron International, who was working at the pad when the fire started. One other employee was hospitalized in the blast. Up to 20 others were working on the pad at the time, some suffered minor injuries.

Greene County Emergency Management Agency Director Greg Leather said monitoring at the site still shows no dangerous levels of pollution in the air from leaking gas.

The fire burned for several days before crews were able to move equipment from near the well head far enough away to stop the ignition source.
