Cleanup continues following vehicle pileup in Clearfield County

By: WJAC Web Staff

BRADFORD TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- The cleanup continues after a chain-reaction crash that involved nearly 50 vehicles and injured more than a dozen people on a Clearfield County interstate.

PennDOT officials said the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 will be closed between exits 133 (Kylertown/Philipsburg) and 123 (Woodland/Shawville) until at least 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Clearfield Hospital officials said 16 people were treated for moderate to minor injuries after the crash that happened just west of Clearfield Wednesday morning.

Officials said one person was taken from the scene to another hospital with severe injuries.

Officials said the first reports about the crash came in about 7 a.m. between the Kylertown and Clearfield areas.

State police at Clearfield said due to the freezing rain coming through in the morning created slippery roads conditions, contributing to the crash.

Arial video of the crash scene showed several tractor trailers and vehicles mangled along the highway.

PennDOT had closed the eastbound lanes of I-80 in that area at about the same time because of other weather-related accidents. That side of the highway reopened at about 11 a.m.

Clearfield Hospital said it activated its emergency plans to handle the immediate influx of patients from the crash.

Officials said many doctors who worked night shift stayed to help with the patients in the emergency room and some staff members who lived in the immediate Clearfield area needed to be called in because other employees weren't able to make it to work on time because of the extreme weather conditions.
