Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Centre County seeking 50 mentors in 50 days
By: Lauren Hensley
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Centre County is reaching out to help find 50 mentors to 50 children in just 50 days. The challenge is halfway over and organizers said they are hopeful they will reach their goal, but they still need your help.
Dozens are children were participating in many different activities Monday with their big brothers and sisters, but these aren't biological siblings. The big brothers and sisters are volunteers with the Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Centre County.
They spent time helping their little sisters and brothers with homework, playing board games and throwing the football around. For the children this may simply just be fun, but it is more than just play time. These children are learning skills and building friendships that could last a lifetime. The volunteers are also getting a lot out of the friendship too.
"I am going to be a high school teacher, so I just wanted to get involved with kids and work my way up to high school age," said big sister Olivia Murphy-Sweet. "Mikey was my lucky first kid to hang out with this year."
Big sister Olivia and little brother Mikey love playing sports together but no every child has a big brother or sister to call their own.
"Well, we always have a need for volunteers we always have between 80 or sometimes more kids on the waiting list," said Division Director Denise McCann.
That is why the program is posing a challenge to the community. They are seeking 50 mentors for 50 children in just 50 days. It's day 25 of the challenge and so far organizers have had dozens of applications.
Still, more need to come forward to help kids like fifth-grader Josh Harman find their match.
"I would feel happy [to get a big brother] and do a lot of stuff with him," Harman said.
