UPMC Altoona, nurses union reach tentative contract agreement

ALTOONA, Pa. -- UPMC Altoona and the union that represents the hospital's registered nurses have reached a tentative contract agreement and a vote has been set for the union membership.

The hospital and SEIU Healthcare PA, the union that represents the hospital's 800 nurses, reached the tentative three-year agreement Wednesday night, officials said.

Nurses will be able to vote on the contract throughout the day Friday at the Hampton Inn in Altoona. The union said nurses will be able to vote through 8 p.m., with the results of the votes expected to be available at about 9:30 p.m.

The nurses held a one-day unfair labor practice strike on Feb. 11 in response to rejecting a hospital offer, which UPMC officials said was their final and best offer.

Nurses were permitted to return to work at a staggered rate over the next several days, with some also traveling to march in front of UPMC headquarters in Pittsburgh in response to the contract talks.

The two sides have had several meetings since the strike regarding a new contract.
