Johnstown man sentenced for sexually assaulting girl

EBENSBURG, Pa. -- After months of court delays, a Cambria County man has been sentenced to decades behind bars for sexually assaulting a young girl more than 20 years ago.

Albert Baldish Sr. will spend 35 to 70 years in prison and was labeled a sexually violent predator during sentencing before Judge Timothy Creany at the courthouse in Ebensburg Thursday morning.

Baldish raped and sexually assaulted a 6-year-girl over a six-year period between 1993 and 1999, prosecutors said. The victim came forward in February 2012 and Baldish was arrested.

6 News' Maria Miller reported Creany said before issuing the sentence that he agreed with the jury's conviction and that Baldish's actions were despicable, saying Baldish violated the victim's trust.

Baldish maintained his innocence while leaving the courtroom after sentencing.

Delays in Baldish's sentencing spanned several months following being found guilty of the abuse in August 2013 because defense and prosecution attorneys were battling over the assessment conducted to determine if Baldish was a sexually violent predator.

The victim, who is now 28, testified at trial that Baldish began assaulting her at age 6 by inappropriately touching her, and the abuse became worse over the years and continued until she was 12.
