Local groups providing fish frys on Fridays until Easter

By: WJAC Web Staff

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent for people who celebrate the Christian faith.

Today as well as every Friday until Easter, Christians are urged to not eat meat, so fish frys are being provided throughout the area.

One business that supplies fish and other food to local churches, fire halls and groups for their events, caught up with 6 News.

Tony Sunseri Wholesale Food, located on Oak Street in Johnstown, supplies food to a lot of schools, hospitals and prisons, but during Lent churches and fire halls are high on their list.

Breaded fish, crab cakes and clams are in demand for the fish frys especially this year.

We have a lot of repeated customers, said Anthony Battaglia. A lot of these fish frys and the ladies from the churches have been doing this for years. Its really great for our area, I know from living in different parts of the county they dont get this type of atmosphere and this community and to help churches out its kind of cool to see."

Battaglia told 6 News that the cost of fish is going up and they expect increases in pricing because the cost of fish has increased.

Many fish frys have already started and advise everyone to check with their local parish to see if one is being held at their local church.
