Students learn dance to raise money for playground

By: WJAC Web Staff

ST MARYS, Pa. -- The students of South St Marys Street Elementary held a flash mob dance in their gym Friday.

They raised awareness that they do not have a playground and would like to find a way to raise the money to build one.

We had the entire school learn a flash mob routine, said teacher Heather Kocjancic. Were using it for our playground project to help raise awareness about our upcoming playground.

The school needs at least $12,000 by spring and said its a project truly needed.

We have kids right now playing on asphalt, said teacher Mandy Assalone. So safety-wise when theyre trying to play games theyre falling and getting scraped up. They also dont have a place to climb, and hand and upper body strength is really lacking.

The flash mob dance, which was designed to like an exercise, took only a few weeks for the 636 students to learn.

The students hope the results will last a lifetime and they are asking everyone to donate.
