Gypsy moths spotted in Centre Co.

By: Lauren Hensley

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.-- A minor insect outbreak has two Centre County communities on alert. Patton Township leaders said gypsy moths have been found in Patton and Ferguson townships. The creatures can be very deadly to oak trees.  Gypsy moths start laying eggs in July. If the eggs are not found and destroyed, they will hatch next spring, which is why officials are keeping a close eye on this bug.

“It’s not the moths but the caterpillars that are the problems.  They will take or eat all of the leaves off an oak tree, and if you get enough of them they can denude an entire neighborhood. It is very annoying. People will not be able to use their yards when we are having major infestations,” said Doug Erickson, Patton Township manager.

The last major outbreak of gypsy moths in Centre County was in 2009. The areas impacted will be checked later on this summer to have a better idea of what residents can expect to happen next year.
