Somerset County fire department improves fire protection rating

By: Jackalyn Kovac

CENTRAL CITY, Pa. -- The Central City Fire Department received notification its Public Protection Classification, PPC, had improved from a class 4 to a class 3. The rating was evaluated by the Insurance Service Office.

"We thought we did very well on the grading," said Chief Dale Russian. "The department stepped up and they deserve a pat on the back because it was a big effort, it really was."

The ISO grades fire companies on a scale from one to 10, one being the best and 10 meaning the department isn't meeting the minimum criteria.

Communities can receive a new evaluation every seven to 10 years.

"We strived very hard in the past three years to increase our training, increase our response by our people out to the calls and everything," Russian said. "Overall we're very pleased that this has happened for the community."

The improved rating helps the department's community, because for most, insurance premiums are directly impacted by the grade.

Russian said when the department improved from class five to class four, residents saw up to a 10 percent discount.

The classification for Central City and Shade Township goes into effect on Oct. 1.
