Gelenberg, Eckenrode Wins District 6 Golf Crowns

HOLLIDAYSBURG -- State College's Ben Gelenberg nearly gave a District 6 golf championship away on the 18th hole of Scotch Valley Country Club in Hollidaysburg, but was given another chance and took advantage to win his second consecutive title.

The Little Lions sophomore had a two-foot putt to win the tournament on the final hole. When it lipped out the right side of the cup, Hollidaysburg's Hunter Shields, who led by a stroke with four holes to play, and Geleneberg played a sudden-death playoff hole.

Shields bogeyed the extra hole while Gelenberg made par, securing his second District 6-AAA golf championship in as many years.

State College also won the Class AAA team title.

Jeremy Eckenrode of Central Cambria led wire-to-wire Wednesday, shooting 75 to win his first district crown by three shots over Red Devils teammate Dom Stevens. Eckenrode shot a two-day total of 153.

The win is Central Cambria's second in as many years; Max Kirsch won the District 6-AA title a year ago.
