SFU women beats Mount St. Mary's 68-63 for NEC finals berth

EMMITTSBURG, Md. -- Alexa Hayward scored 20 points to lead Saint Francis to a 68-63 win over Mount St. Mary's in the Northeast Conference semifinals Wednesday, helping the Red Flash clinch a berth in the conference championship game for the fourth time in five years.

Saint Francis will face top-seed Robert Morris in the finals Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Sewell Center.

SFU broke open a four-point halftime edge early in the second half, jumping out to a 51-35 lead. The Mount responded with a 14-2 run over a two minute span from 6:00 remaining to 4:00 left and trailed 60-56.

Mount St. Mary's had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but a three-point attempt rimmed out with five seconds remainings.

Saint Francis' trip to the NEC Championship is the school's 16th in 21 years. They last won in 2011, the second of back-to-back championships under Susan Robinson-Fruchtl.
