This week's Try It Thursday tests Extra Life, a small green disk that promises to help keep refrigerate food fresh.

The device claims to prolong the life of produce by neutralizing the ethylene gas released by fruits and vegetables as they ripen.

This week's tester, Cyndi Gallucci, said she buys fresh vegetables every week and always ends up throwing spoiled food away.

"I'm hoping with the cost of lettuce and vegetables these days it would be nice to find something to help save money," Gallucci said.

To test Extra Life, she divided up lettuce and celery and put one of each in separate bins, one with the Extra Life disc and one without. After one week, it was clear that the little green disc worked well, especially for the lettuce.

"I think with lettuce I would probably try it again. The celery, not so much of a difference," Gallucci said.

For the overall value of the saved food, she gave the Extra Life a thumbs-up.
