For anyone who has ever struggled with opening packaging, the Open It all-in-one opener claims to open just about anything.

The device was designed to be multi-purpose, easy to use and safe.

Our tester, Lauren, first tested the screwdriver component to reach a tiny battery compartment on the back of a personal handheld device. Open It was a little shaky, but worked well overall.

Next she tried it on sealed hard plastic.

"It wasn't easy at all," she said. "I was kind of wrestling with it. I think if the blades were thinner or longer, it would be easier. But as it was, it kept getting stuck while I was cutting, even before I got halfway, so I had to turn around the package and sort of wrestle with it. ...This doesn't really seem all that effective."

At a local meat market, a worker there used the device to slice open a cardboard box. He said he liked the fact that the blade retracted, but said he prefers a box cutter.

Because the device failed to open everything easily, our testers gave it a thumbs-down.
