Blizzard Warning In Effect For Much Of Alleghenies

A blizzard warning was in effect for areas south of Interstate 80, Severe Weather Team 6 said.

The blizzard warning is in effect until 7 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in State College.

Areas north of I-80 are under a winter storm warning.

Snow will continue through much of Wednesday, with the heaviest snowfall occurring though the early to mid-afternoon hours. Snowfall rates up to 1 inch per hour are expected at times mainly across portions of the Susquehanna River valley, the NWS said.

As the area of low pressure strengthens off the coast, northwest winds will steadily increase, with frequent gusts between 30 and 40 mph developing late Wednesday morning and then continuing through the afternoon. These winds, combined with occasional heavy snow, will result in considerable blowing and drifting of snow, with blizzard conditions possible at times, the NWS said.

Total snowfall accumulations are expected to average between 6 and 12 inches over most of the warned area. Snow is expected to taper off Wednesday evening.

A blizzard warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds will lead to whiteout conditions, making travel extremely dangerous. Any travel is strongly discouraged. If you must venture out, carry a winter survival kit in your car, including food, blankets and a cellular phone. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle, the NWS said.
