RIDGWAY, Pa. -- Elk County officials said the county has been told it will qualify for low-interest federal disaster loans in the wake of severe flooding on May 21.
The county and, in particular Ridgway Borough and Ridgway Township, were hard hit when a series of thunderstorms dropped four to five inches of rain that caused the Clarion River to crest at a near-record high of 22 feet that morning.
Flooding was also reported in Jay Township, Johnsonburg and the county seat of St. Marys, and Huston Township, Clearfield County, among other places.
A spokeswoman with the Small Business Administration, which will administer the loans, said the county had to prove it had at least 25 homes or businesses with flood damage that was at least 40 percent uninsured to qualify for the disaster declaration.
