In his "we have no chance of winning this one" opening statement, Jerry Sandusky's attorney, Joe Amendola compared the case to David vs. Goliath. So far Goliath is dominating. In two days we've had tearful and compelling testimony along with Michael McQueary tangling with the defense during cross examination. The prosecution started strong Monday putting facial photos to the alleged victims. And the photo lineup looked like your community youth soccer team, kids about 10 or 12 years old.
This case has been so extensively documented during the pre-trial phase we've heard few new details. But to see these alleged victims (even the judge told the jury they're still alleged victims) take the stand to tell their stories adds a new dimension along with some courtroom drama. We saw that Tuesday morning with Accuser #1 fighting tears through some of his testimony. Sandusky's legal team has tried to pick apart inconsistent statements made to police. But both victims who have testified so far have said on the stand, "Listen I don’t want to be here". They go on to admit when police started asking questions, they were initially reluctant to give the full story. They said their stories changed because they were humiliated and want to forget about this episode in their lives.
Sandusky does have his supporters in and outside the courthouse. We've talked to a few. One woman saying she believes in Jerry that he's a wonderful man. Another claiming Sandusky was trying to help kids who in some cases can be difficult, especially when it comes to discipline. But his attorneys haven't done much yet to attack the accusers’ credibility. The cross examination of Mike McQueary was curious to say the least. Among their biggest moves so far is filing a motion that Sandusky may be afflicted with some type of psychological disorder.
The trial is drawing the anticipated crowd. In the courtroom today, one of Penn State's early linebacking stars who is now quite successful in financial markets saying he's “just observing”. Attorneys for both Tim Curley and Gary Schultz were there to hear McQueary's testimony. I spotted at least one member of the Louis Freeh commission taking notes, along with other investigators and accusers’ attorneys. Plus a woman who says she was sexually abused as a child then adds her court appearances were difficult, and that motivated her to open a shelter for abuse victims in Maryland. She sat in with us during several jury selection sessions last week saying she feels compelled to be in Bellefonte for this trail.
