June 17, 2012: Sandusky expected to testify

"In public, Jerry acted like my father. When we were alone it was like he was my girlfriend."

We heard a fair amount of testimony from his accusers last week about Jerry Sandusky being a father figure. Six of the alleged victims had no fathers in their lives, while they were growing up. How's Sandusky going to spend Father’s Day? At least part of the day he will be answering questions from a prosecution psych doctor. It’s in response to his attorney now offering the Histrionic Disorder option for the jury. Some type of mental problem to counteract the prosecution's presentation that Sandusky is a serial predator. So prosecutors say okay but we'd like to have one of our experts check him out also which opens the door to all kinds of other possibilities, especially if Sandusky takes the stand and is then cross examined. At the least, the jury will hear from dueling experts. Not uncommon in a high profile trial like this. Will Sandusky testify? You know he wants to despite the fact his legal counsel may be screaming "no way" to him. He's been in denial from early on. Even after he knew he was under investigation for child sexual abuse charges several years ago, Sandusky was still showing up at Friday night, high school football games in this area, with young boys.  Now he thinks he'll simply take the stand and tell the jury he's been misunderstood and doesn't know why these kids, who he was just trying to help.. would make up these stories. If you thought Bob Costas had a field day with his Sandusky interview, one can only imagine what twisted mess of testimony prosecutor Joe McGettigan will leave in the witness chair after his cross examination of the defendant.

"I didn't want to upset him, he was Jerry Sandusky"

That was a theme from many of the accusers when asked, "Why didn't you tell someone?" From what's emerging (allegedly) from records at Old Main, it almost sounds like their response too.  Just tell Jerry he can't take showers with kids on campus anymore. You could tell by the attendance at the Second Mile golf tourney kick off banquet in its last few years that something was up. In its heyday, you had a wall-to-wall parade of former PSU All-American football players and athletes at the banquet. Towards the end there were barely a handful of ex-players. Was it a cover up at Dear Old State? We'll find out more when others are possible charged, and e-mails and other correspondence is released. This might not even be Sandusky's last trial. Prosecutors have talked about another possible set of victims. They could have another set of charges ready to go.  Just in case, something unexpectedly turns against the prosecution in this one. Or a conviction is reversed on appeal.. or juror misconduct..whatever. But sitting through what we did last week in courtroom one, you get a better understanding why so many were praying Sandusky would take a plea, if nothing else to spare the community the gruesome details. But he's entitled to his day in court, and we haven't heard his defense yet.
