Liberty Use Strong Fourth Quarter To Top Shock

Friday, September 26, 2008

(Sports Network) - Janel McCarville scored 17 points as New York used a strong fourth quarter to upend Detroit, 60-56, in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals at Madison Square Garden.

Shameka Christon added 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Liberty, who outscored the Shock 24-14 in the final frame.

Essence Carson chipped in with eight points for New York, which advanced to the conference finals by beating the Connecticut Sun in three games.

Deanna Nolan had 22 points and six boards for the Shock, who topped the Indiana Fever in the conference semifinals. Katie Smith finished with 13 points.

Game 2 in the beat-of-three series is set for Sunday in Detroit.

Trailing by three, 59-56, with 15 seconds left, the Shock had a chance to even things when Nolan got a good look from three-point range but her shot came up short.

Erin Thorn then connected on 1-of-2 from the charity stripe at the other end to secure things for the Liberty.
